The 5 Must-See Beaches in Martinique

A few months ago I went to Martinique with my friends and had a good time. While this country is an extension of France, I have to admit that I was quite impressed with how nice the people were and the beaches! There are so many beaches on that island and they are quite different from one to another. In this blog post, I want to share with you 5 Beaches that you must see next time you are in Martinique.

Les Salines

Located in the South of Martinique, Les Salines (also known as Grande Anses des Salines) is a beautiful white sand beach. You probably saw it already without knowing it since it is often the one you see on postcards. It is one of the most famous beaches in Martinique that welcomes over 2 Million visitors per year. This kilometer long beach has 3 sections: la Grande Anse des Salines, la Petite Anse des Salines and La Grande Terre des Salines à l’est.

For us, it was not that crowded when we went to la Grande Anse des Salines. In fact, all the visitors were spread along the beach leaving all of us with great space. There are few restaurants alongside and we went to Le Panier à Salade restaurant. They welcomed us with a nice cocktail and we ate well! I had chicken there and my friend took a langoustine. The price was reasonable costing me 26 EUR for my lunch, 2 beers, and 2 desserts. It is one of the best places in Martinique to watch the sunset. However, at that time, all the crabs come out and the mosquitos… in other words, you have to leave not long after it.

Le Diamant Beach

The Beach at Le Diamant was the first beach that we went to during our stay in Martinique. What makes this beach so special is that you can see the Diamond Rock, an uninhabited island that is about 175 Meter high! Le Diamant Beach is Martinique’s longest beach with water from the Atlantic. There are few restaurants alongside the beach such as La Playa or Planete Diamant (a restaurant that we went for lunch during our stay).

Anse Dufour

Have you ever swim with turtles before? At Anse Dufour, you have the opportunity to do so. Located on the southwest side of the Island, the water at this beach is simply amazing and clear. According to thousands of reviews online, this is one of the best beaches to go snorkeling!

During our stay in Martinique, we spent a couple of hours there and had a good time. There were only a few people at the beach and the weather was nice and sunny. In all the beaches we went to, this one was the clearer and the calmest one. If you plan to go there, please bring goggles or else you are missing out on seeing cute fishes and the turtles. There are also two restaurants by the beach that have fresh and a beautiful view. I highly suggest going to the first one that you see on your right while going down the steps. (sorry I write down the name!) As I mentioned in my previous Martinique blog post, I had the catch of the day, a beer, a cocktail, and a dessert and it cost me 21 EUR! (a Usual basic meal in Martinique cost 15 EUR).

This beach is totally worth a visit!

P.S. The roads are not the best so watch out!

Carbet

On our way to St-Pierre, we couldn’t help but notice the black sand beach with coco palms that was alongside the road. Le Carbet is a village located at the North of Martinique. The black sand of this beach comes from the volcanic eruption of Mt. Pelee in 1902!

When we came back from Ville St-Pierre, we stopped there for a quick dip.

Anse Couleuvre

This beach is the last one on my list because I didn’t see it. Located at the northernmost point of Martinique, going there is dangerous and it is “not worth it” for some while others say that it is definitely worth it. It is not a touristic beach because it is a hell of an adventure to get to it. However, once there, you see the beautiful black sand and it is empty. Having the beach to yourself is one of the best perks of going to the beach. We met people from France and they told us that the beach was beautiful and it felt like it was their private beach.

That being said, there are over 20 beaches in Martinique and I want to go back to see them all. What about you? What is your favorite beach in Martinique?
