Travel for ”Free” If You Are Willing To ”Work”

I previously posted about different ways to travel for free but it involved being a ”content creator” or having some kind of influence. While I understand that many people would love to travel but don’t have a platform that would allow them to, I have some news for you! It is possible to travel for free and it has nothing to do with the number of followers you have on social media. In fact, you don’t even need to be present on social media and you can enjoy free stay all over the world. The answer to the question that you have in mind is WORKAWAY!

Read my other article on how to travel for free.

I just came back from a trip to Costa Rica and met many foreign travelers that were in town to work and they told me about Workaway, which is a website where you can help people in exchange of free accommodations.

About Workaway

I went on Workaway’s website and it was clear and easy to understand. They promote sustainable travel and cultural exchange. You can volunteerĀ at different locations around the world, do a family exchange, farm stays, learn a different language and even be a host. On their website, you can browse through thousands of opportunities available in over 185 countries. Some opportunities even pay you for your work which means that you get paid to travel. However, to get access to all these cool opportunities there is a small fee attached to it, which is 38$ USD. You can also sign up with a friend for 48$ USD total! (Now that’s a deal!)

Here are a few examples of cool travel opportunities.

Experience Rural Life In Sweden

A family in Sweden is looking for some help around the house and they are willing to host you in their small guest house that has one room with two beds. You can either go alone or do the work with your friend.

Help A Yoga Retreat In Jamaica

If you are a yogi this might be just for you! This family needs help for their yoga retreat and in exchange, they are offering the accommodations if available. You can also attend yoga classes, assist the teacher and more. While this opportunity is only available for two people, they are available to help you discover Jamaica!

Help The Turtles in Costa Rica

This is something I did when I was in Costa Rica, however, I was not part of the program. This non-profit organization locatedĀ on a private island wants you to be part of an incredible experience. They need help with caring, gardening and with the tourists and in exchange, they give you a place to sleep.

This program is different than the one I did in Costa Rica. See the video below for more information or simply head over AsvoCR.org

Another Alternative To Travel For Free

If you want to help a company in particular or contact a resort itself, go for it. During my stay in Montezuma, I wanted to move from where I was but didn’t want to spend extra money on accommodations. I talked to the local and was able to negotiate a deal with a local hostel: a free stay in exchange of pictures and it worked! This can be done with many companies from all over the world. If you have a particular talent or you are good at creating content, photos, videos or blogs, this can work. See a few pictures I took for Pura Vida Montezuma.

That being said, there are many ways for you to travel for free, you just have to do some research! Now I am curious… if you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
