My Essential Equipment to Create Content (Photos + Videos)

Content is KING and a lot of you reached out to me to know more about how you could start creating dope content today. Personally, if you have a phone, this is all that you need but if you want more, I can share with you the list of equipment I have been working with!

iPhone 7+ – 630$

Sometimes, I create content only with my iPhone. In fact, I find the quality of it good and perfect to take pictures and record videos. To a certain extent, I’ve also edited video with my iPhone.

Here’s a vlog that was completely recorded with my Iphone.

DJI Osmo Mobile – 170$

The DJI Osmo Mobile is my go to when I have to shoot videos with my phone. In fact, I love using it because the shots are stable and smooth. When creating videos, there are 2 factors that people are usually noticing the most: the quality of your video and the quality of your sound. I went to Halifax last year to shoot a vlog for Narcity/Chevrolet (see more about that trip here) and the Osmo made a big difference. As simple as walking towards the beach to filming a sequence when you are moving, the Osmo Mobile makes it all smooth. It is also very easy to use, you can see more about the work I did with the Osmo in this video below. If you plan to only create content with your phone, I highly suggest to integrate the DJI Osmo Mobile in your list of equipment.

Rode SmartLav+ Lavalier Microphone – 100$

As mentioning before, the quality of your sound is very important when creating content and this is why I use the Rode SmartLav+ Mic. I simply plug it into my phone and from there, I can record myself talking and the sound is good. I’ve used the mic many times but it is not the best when you want to vlog with your cell phone. I personally think that my phone microphone is good most of the time. However, I use the Rode Mic when I shoot with my vlogging camera (the Canon G7X Mark II) because I feel that the quality of the sound from it is not the best. In addition, when going to an event, it tends to be noisy and using this mic makes it so much easier to understand what is going on. Here’s a vlog that I did with the mic and you will see for yourself! Having the mic part of my equipment I create content with gives me peace when I want to record a video in a noisy place.

Canon G7X Mark II – 800$

When I first wanted to make vlog, I knew I had to buy a camera. An investment was required to step my game up. After weeks of research, I decided to buy the Canon G7X Mark II. This camera is probably one of the most popular cameras for vloggers. It is small, easy to use and has wi-fi! The wi-fi comes handy when you want to work on your content on your phone without using a computer. No lie, that camera went through a lot with me and it is still alive! The beauty of this camera is that it takes beautiful pictures ( it has 20.1 MP) and also has a manual mode if you know exactly what you are doing. Unfortunately, a downside of that camera is that it doesn’t have any sound input, which forces me to use my phone and the Lavalier to take better sound. In addition, you can’t change the lens which limits you to the same look for your videos. However, the Canon G7X Mark II is still my favorite equipment to create content with!

Head over my Youtube Channel to see more of my videos. Most of them (if not all) are made with the equipment I mentioned above!

BONUS

Recently, I’ve been working with other equipment and as I am still learning the best way to use it but I can see a difference in the quality of my content. I’ve been using the Sony A6500, a camera that is made for ph0tos and videos and very effective in low light. I use it with two different lens, a portrait and a wide one. I don’t use it to vlog because the screen of the camera does not flip forward but I use it to take pictures.

Here are some pictures and videos I have done with the Sony A6500!
