06 Mar So You Want To Be A Content Creator? Here’s How To Get It Started!

Few months ago, I released an article about how to succeed on social media with tips from 4 successful content creators. After getting good feedback on that article, I decided to write this article.

Just like being a basketball player, being a content creator is easier than you think. However, to be a good one…that takes practice, motivation, and persistence.

What is a content creator? A Content Creator is someone that can create content from scratches (essentially for marketing purposes) such as photography, videos, and articles. Essentially, if you take pictures on your phone, in my eyes, you are a content creator. My journey to becoming a content creator started with me being a content curator. This somewhat is different because a content curator simply implies of finding content that can be shared. It all started with the Instagram Page @MTLPromos where I was reposting different pictures taken in Montreal that I found nice. After reposting many pictures (over 500 in a year), I’ve decided to buy a compact camera to start taking pictures and started to vlog as well. This is when I would say that my journey as a content creator really started to be serious.

I personally think that being a content creator is a useful skill because it will be good to sell yourself, make money and understand quality.

Research and Study

If you want to become a content creator, you have to do research, learn and study. To take a picture is easy but you have to go more in the details and understand why you decide to take a picture a certain way, how to edit your photos, your videos and more. Personally, you can use different websites to help you become better such as

• PetaPixel Tutorial – This website gives lots of tutorial on how to be a better photographer
• PhotographyLife – A website about photography as a lifestyle
• Youtube  – I learn most of my videos editing skills on Youtube, you just have to search
• Lynda and Udemy – Online classes to help you with photography, videography and writing

I can guarantee that all these websites will help you to become a great content creator and this leads us to the next step: Practice

Practice

We often hear practice makes perfect, it is the case for being a content creator. Although, I do not believe that you can be a ”perfect” content creator but you can become a better content creator by creating content that generates more results and more engagement. You do not need much to go out and practice, if you are reading this right now, you already have the essentials… you have eyes, a phone and/or a computer. Personally, I do all my content with my camera and my phone, I barely use my computer! Go out there and shoot! The more you do it, the better you will become at it.

The Tools!

Essentially, I decided to launch this blog to give tips to help people on how to be better online but also to share with you the behind the scene of my life. As a content creator, I have published over 1000 original pictures taken from me on social media, from food pictures to training photos and videos as well, I constantly put out great content online for my clients and myself. However what are the tools that can help you become a better content creator? In term of equipment, you are good to start with your phone, nowadays they take beautiful pictures! Here’s a list of tools that you should consider.

• Photography Editing : VSCO & Snapseed on Mobile ; Lightroom and Photoshop on Computer
• Videography : Imovie, Final Cut Pro & Adobe Premiere
• Writing : Notes on your phone (easy one eh!)

Analyze and Repeat

Now that you know the easy steps to get it started, you just have to keep going at it. To be better, take a look at the results you get from your content and develop your own style. Most of the content creators now are on Instagram and I wrote an article about getting your Instagram Stats here. Then, repeat, repeat, repeat.
